Baroota, which is about 100 km north of the Clare Valley. The first Baroota wine to raise influential eyebrows was the Hazyblur Shiraz 2000, primarily made for the USA market. In his Wine Advocate ratings for 2002, Robert Parker, in awarding it an impressive 93 points wrote that it was: "a powerful, extracted, muscular effort with great intensity as well as palate presence. It reveals huge richness, moderately high tannin and elevated alcohol (15%). Nevertheless, there are immense reserves of fruit, glycerine and density in this long, promising Shiraz ".

The same team responsible for the Hazyblur grapes have produced the goods again for Kilikanoon's Kevin Mitchell, who has formed a partnership with much respected Barossa Valley winemaker Rolf Binder of Veritas to make and market Baroota Shiraz. Rolf and Kevin shared the winemaking equally and have worked wonders with the ripe Baroota material, capturing the natural warmth and generosity of the area without any trace of the jammy characters so common to other relatively hot climates.

The evidence is in the glass: while still a baby in the barrel, you can clearly see this bold, young red developing into a truly gorgeous creature over the next decade.

  • The Clare Valley is home to some of Australia's and the World's best wines and has been making wine since the first grapes were planted in 1851. Today there are more than 40 cellar doors along a narrow 40 kilometre corridor, between Auburn and Clare. The towns are spaced closely together.

Known as home of the Riesling, the Clare Valley also shines in other varieties such as Shiraz - taking home it's fair share of awards.
