A champion in the making
Somerled is one of the most exciting new labels to come from South Australia and has arrived on the scene with a super premium Shiraz from McLaren Vale. The inspiration drawn for the wine is from the Moody’s thoroughbred ‘Somerled’. This is backed with more than 30 years successful experience in grape selection for Penfolds/Southcorp.
The Moodys select top class fruit from chosen producers soon after fermentation and pick up the winemaking process from there. This unique approach gives Somerled the edge as only the best parcels are selected from old, low-yielding vineyards.
Somerled Shiraz is 100% McLaren Vale – an appellation linked to intensely-flavoured reds of quality and consistency. Its distinctive ‘terroir’ of the area’s maritime conditions and varying soils and aspects, lets Shiraz shine here.
Maturation for 21 months in a mix of new and used American (65%) and French (35%) oak to evenly integrate the flavours, shores up the existing quality and characters and adds complexity.
The tiny production run (890 dozen total) of the 2001 Somerled McLaren Vale Shiraz means there is no cellar door, mail order or retail sales.

COLOUR:
Black. Intense ruby hues
NOSE:
Sweet creamy oak, cherries, intense and confectionary.
PALATE:
Stylish, with good structure, fleshy fruit, meaty with tight balanced acidity, paper tannins and a warm and long finish.
COMMENTS:
Excellent palate and structure with good pure fruit that needs a bit of time to open up, but watch out when it does. A wine that was built for the long haul.

These wines are built for the medium to long term, delivering good drinking after five years, with more characters developing over 10-15 years.
