The Heathcote winery and Cellar door are located in the historic Thomas Craven stores originally built in 1860. The stores included stables that were previously used to house Cobb & Co horses and which are now transformed into a fully equipped winery, which was established in 1980.
The grapes are sourced from the Heathcote vineyard located about six kilometres from the Heathcote Township and is situated on a hillside comprising mainly of ancient Cambrian soil. The vineyard consists of predominantly low yielding Shiraz vines and Australia’s oldest Viognier plantings (Viognier is the predominant white variety of the Rhone Valley in France and Shiraz the predominant Red variety). The Viognier is used to produce arguably Australia’s best straight Viognier and Shiraz blends.
The winemaker Jonathan Mepham has instigated a winery management system that incorporates far lower vineyard yields (between 1 to 3 tonnes per acre), rigorous quality control and greater integration of French oak.

The vineyard was initially planted in 1978. Over time, shiraz has become the dominant variety as the Heathcote Region found its place. The Mail Coach shiraz is predominantly derived from here. The wine reflects the vineyard’s maturity, with successive vintages producing consistently high quality shiraz reflecting only seasonal variations. All vines are drip irrigated, however water is used judicially and only when required to maintain vine health during prolonged periods of dry or heat.
